Mistakes I made when choosing a fishing kayakEither way, this blog post is just for you and we believe it will assist you greatly as you make the decision to enter this awesome sport.

Let’s start by learning from mistakes I made early on in my Kayak Bass Fishing Career.

Mistakes I Initially Made When Trying To Select The Right Bass Fishing Kayak

The biggest mistake I made early on was not fully understanding what was needed when choosing the right fishing kayak for tournaments.

There are several things that I did not take into consideration and it cost me a lot of money and prevented me from actually focusing on developing myself as a kayak bass angler.

When I first started out in kayak fishing I began with a perception sit inside kayak angler 10.5 now known as the sound 10.5.

While this kayak was a great boat, it was not suitable for me. I nearly maxed out the weight capacity, and did not have nowhere near enough room for tackle, multiple rod/reel combos, storage, etc.

I had a lot of fun out of this kayak, but quickly outgrew it.

Don’t Make These Same Mistakes When Choosing A Fishing Kayak!

After that, I purchased the FeelFree Moken 12.5v2. Yes, I was excited to have it, but quickly outgrew it.

So within two months, I moved up to the Feelfree Lure 11.5v2 although a foot shorter in length, it was a step up in the right direction, but it was another purchase that I wish I would have quickly avoided.

So, I sold it and then got into the Nucanoe Pursuit 2016 edition. The pursuit was the first kayak that I began to appreciate and love, but it was nearly 14ft long and 35″ inches wide. I could stand in it, but it had a plethora of issues with allowing too much water in the cockpit area of the kayak. Again, I did not select the right one for my weight once again.

I ended up trading it for a Bonafide SS127. The SS127 was a solid platform, extremely stable. I could stand in it, had plenty of room for my gear, but what the kayak made up in all those other areas that the others could not, it paddled like a barge, it was super slow and adding a motor to it for me would have made it less stable and would have taken up some of the extra room that I had.

In February 2021 Nucanoe had unveiled a new fishing kayak that I had laid my eyes on and even did a review on my youtube channel. The Unlimited. But, due it to it’s lack of availability I pushed on forward and ended up in an Old Town Topwater 120 PDL.

Again, this fishing Kayak was solid, it was a pedal driven kayak and it was fast, stable, and allowed me to carry a lot of gear, but not the amount I truly wanted to have with me and after a disastrous day on the new river up in Virginia I decided it was time for me to take a break.

I stepped away from kayak bass fishing for a few months and reassessed my situation. Of course, I knew that was not going to last long because of how much I loved the sport. So I traded a small 12ft Jon boat that I had for another old town kayak. This time it was the Sportsman 120 non-pdl version. Again, a solid kayak, but this time I got it just so I could get back in the sport that I was so desperately missing.

Why I chose the NuCanoe Unlimited Bass Fishing Kayak?

And then it happened. I finally got word that the NuCanoe Unlimited Was Available at Paddleyax Kayaks in Independence, VA. I quickly jumped on it and drove up and purchased it without question.

I chose the Nucanoe Unlimited for a variety of reasons, but I’ll only list the top ones below. NuCanoe Unlimited Fishing Kayak

  1. Width
  2. Stability
  3. Portability
  4. Rigability
  5. Overall Weight Capacity

These are just a few of the reasons why I chose to fish on the Unlimited. It’s super stable, nimble when it needs to be, turns like a dream, is super comfortable for all day fishing and can be customized beyond your wildest dreams.

You get to make the Nucanoe Unlimited what you want it to be, when you want it. It literally is a blank slate that allows you to make it what you want.

Whatever you decide make sure that the fishing kayak you choose is suitable for your needs and pick it right the first time so you avoid the headaches that I had to endure.
